Queerbash 16 a Sweet Success!!

Queerbash! If you were one of those people we hadn’t beaten over the head with advertising, Queerbash is our biggest annual event, and the most anticipated event of the academic year! (for us, anyway, we don’t do much.)

The first Queerbash took place in 2004, organised by the late Paddy McHugh as a way of bringing together the queer and straight communities. This year, seeing as the event was growing up and now able to drive in the US, we decided to celebrate in style, and as such our theme was Sweet 16!

As always, the event was hosted in Dolan’s Warehouse in Limerick, and couldn’t have been more accommodating and helpful!!

Preparations began weeks in advance, between themes, acts and of course, decorations! On the day, prep began at around 2 p.m., and kept on till just before doors opened! In just under 7 hours, the venue was turned into a kaleidoscope of old society photos, banners, and balloons. LOTS of balloons, good grief, it was like the Tim Curry IT gone up to eleven.

Doors opened at 9 p.m., and entry was as usual €10. We had a great turnout, and we were glad to see so many familiar faces, old and new, in the crowd!

The acts started around 10, with our former presidents, Luke Slattery and Ciara Gordon as co-hosts! After getting the crowd prepped with some banter and jokes, our first act kicked off the night with a bang. Another former president, Ms. Mona, got the night off to a flying start with her performance to Elizabeth Gillies & Victoria Justice’s “Take a Hint!”

After Mona got the crowd warmed up, Luke and Ciara became assistants to our very own Paul Jordan, as he cast some magic over the night. After some fun stuff with cards, and a Rubik’s Cube, he decided to spice things up a bit in a little bit involving some red cups, a nail, and Ciara’s hands! Thankfully, all went well, and Ciara’s nerves were shot for the night!

Next up was no stranger to the Queerbash stage, as the winner of AMUL All-Stars Edition, Ms Sarah Tonin, gave a show to remember! Sarah, yet another former president, had the whole room captivated with her moves to Britney’s “If U Seek Amy”!

Next up, we had Ger O’ Hanlon, a Performing Arts with Voice student in UL and newcomer to the Queerbash stage. He brought the house down in spectacular style with his covers of such queens as Beyoncé and Aretha Franklin!

Wrapping up our acts was Queerbash regular Ray Bawle! Ray, a former Dance student in UL rounded out our acts with a mesmerising mix of dance routines and styles.

Following Ray’s performance, our fabulous president Rachel gave a speech before the annual Chorus Line! This year’s track was Walk the Moon’s Shut Up and Dance, and the crowd certainly were quick to comply!

Of course, the night was far from over, with local band “The Tiny Giants” taking over the music, playing a variety of covers in their own pop style and raising the roof! The crowd was certainly pumped up, before our favourite DJ, Eoghan Clark, saw the night out to a close!

The night was a huge success all around, and thank you so much to everyone who helped make the night magical, be it organising, performing or attending! Can’t wait to see you all for Queerbash 17!
